The cover article reported on Republican Presidential Candidate Nixon during the 1960 election campaign against Democrat John Kennedy.

In preparation to painting the Presidential Candidate, Safran was flown to Washington to attend a breakfast meeting held by Nixon. Safran observed Nixon's surprisingly healthy complexion and tried to show it in his final portrait (during the famous televised Checkers debate, Nixon had refused to wear makeup and so had appeared blotchy and sallow).
