The article recounts the economic rebuilding of the European nations after WWII, highlighting the new Common Market, a brainchild of Parisian Jean Monnet.
After the cover portrait ran, Safran received a charming thank you letter from Jean Monnet. Monnet invited Safran to meet him in his Paris office - if the artist was ever in the neighborhood. As it happened, Safran was traveling through Europe with his family and did visit with the creator of the Common Market. Their meeting coincided with the Invasion of the Bay of Pigs, prompting the statesman and artist to discuss the state of the world over coffee.
