The original painting was commissioned for the August 22, 1960 isssue of TIME magazine. The article reported on the civil uprising in the Republic of the Congo, and Lumumba's request for United Nations peacekeeping troops to help restore order.
Due to editorial changes, the cover art was changed and a photograph of UN Secretary Dag Hammerskjold was superimposed over top of Lumumba, leaving only the original background intact.
