Grant Wood

Grant Wood (1891-1942) was an American "regionalist" painter who had the questionable fortune of having his American Gothic become the most famous (and most parodied) American painting of all time.

Even after achieving national recognition with his paintings, Wood continued to do commercial work, illustrating book jackets through the '30's and painting a cover for Time Magazine in 1940.

Despite the homespun subject matter of his paintings, Wood's intricate style was strongly influenced by 15th-century Flemish masters, and their influence can be seen in his detailed landscapes and portraits such as Arnold Comes of Age.
