William Harnett

William Harnett (1848-1892) was a technically brilliant still life painter and the premier American practitioner of trompe l'oeil painting. The power of this technique, in which the artist attempts to deceive the viewer's eye into perceiving a three-dimensional tableau, is unfortunately much diminished over the Internet.
