Thomas Eakins
Thomas Eakins (1844-1916) was a Philadelphia painter, and one of the great American artists of the 19th century. Eakins was never a popular or financial success during his lifetime, but was a great influence on later generations of painters.
Eakins was several times at the center of controversy: one of his greatest paintings, The Gross Clinic (set in an operating theater), was considered by many at the time to be revolting; and he twice lost teaching posts after allowing female students to see male models in the nude.
