TIME featured Tennessee Williams on the cover because his new play The Night of the Iguana had just opened in New York City to rave reviews.

Safran and his wife were sent by TIME to a performance of the play where they enjoyed front row seats. After the show, they went over to the New York City apartment of TIME's drama critic Ted Kalem where they met Williams in person. Safran greatly admired Williams, which is evident in this extraordinary portrait.
