On November 22, 1963 the world witnessed the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Ninety-eight minutes after President Kennedy was pronounced dead from sniper fire, Lyndon Baines Johnson (1908-1973) was sworn in as the 36th President of the United States aboard Air Force One.
It was a secret TIME policy to always commission portraits of newly elected presidents and vice presidents to have on hand for emergency cover requirements (particularly in the event the Vice President might become President). Safran was, therefore, commissioned to paint Johnson with the presidential seal immediately following the 1960 election. Sadly, the portrait was needed for the November 29 issue three years later.
