TIME reported that Nyerere (1929-1999) was considered one of Africa's most sensible and sensitive statesmen. The cover story was about the civil crisis that his government faced when his army rose against him in 1964. After calling in British forces, calm was restored and Nyerere was able to rebuild his country.
