Tischbein (15
Feb 1751 26 June 1829) is the best-known of a German family that
included more than twenty artists in three generations. He was most important
for his engravings of classical antiquities, but is now remembered solely
for this famous portrait of Goethe. Tischbein was Goethe's friend and he
is usually called Goethe Tischbein.
